Late arrival in
Brussels. barely had time to see the studio (roomy), just a few minutes
to leave our stuff. We left Paris at noon. Christian "Grand",
our backliner, Chritian Quermalet, Nico and I. A few more instruments
to load on the way : drums and guitars, just in case we need them. I
slept all way up to the belgian border where we gave a lift to Gog,
the bassist. |

We're soaking wet. Still raining. Dominique Brusson, the sound engineer is on his way from south western France. Meanwhile, we change the guitar strings and set up the drums. The staff's reduced for this first day: Gilles, Sonia et Gog (who left early this morning) have to work. Befor noon, we're ready to record the firts song "Il faudra partir". Christian on the drums, Nico with his guitar and I, sitting below the Hammond : the pedals, played with hands, give more bass sound than with the keyboard. Before 3.00 pm, the live take's recorded. We add a piano. Christian tries an organ. End of the day at 10.00. We'll be the last clients at the italian restaurant around the corner. Seb |

Loads of noise on the avenue down the hotel. The day has started for Brussellers and we're still in bed. Quick breakfast down in a bakery and we head towards the studio. We relisten to yesterday's takes before installing the mics for "Carmelite" : Chritian is in charge of the rythmic stuff (drum, snare and cymbals). This will have us occupied for a couple of hours. We then install the guitar : it takes time to find the good sound different pedals, different mics. Christian has some ideas on the piano and we put them too in the box. Seb |

We start the day recording the drums, the bass and the guitar for "Tchin tchin" (a song we already play on stage). I'm eager to hear what it will sound like with the string quartet that will be coming in 10 days. The afternoon's a bit upsetting : the studio bass amp sounds like a washing powder barril and we need to hire another one. Then the snare drum gets weird and begins to send strange harmonics that we seem unable to fix. We do get upset but by the end of the day, "Independence park" base is on the tape. Nice evening at the italian restaurant (we get habits quickly) and back on foot to the hotel. Nico |

The room we record
in looks like a kindergartenb with dozens of toys-instruments scatterred
all over the place, even in recesses. And the amps, the mics, cables
of all sorts. It's rather excitng to start a guitar take trynig to
define a sound. Let's take the Vox (warmer) or shall we try with the
Fender amp (more "sixties"). The Gibson or the Rickenbacker
? Same questions for the accoustic guiatrs, the basses and the effect
pedals... Solutions seem infinite but once the songs will be recorded,
it will be forever. |

A walk along the
wide Brugman avenue. "Art-nouveau" buildings, bow-windows, yellow
covered wagons in the sun of february. I'm beginning to make Brussels
my place. Must be a nice city to walk in when you don't have to record
an LP. Recollections from the first recording : less experience, fewer
concerts behind us. So, everytime we hab a not so bad take, we kept it.
This time, we get more easily a satisfying stuff but still unperfect.
The questions : whall we do it again ? Will we hear the little defaults
in the end ? Wanting to be too rigorous, won't the songs sound "freezy"
? |
